Hi friends,
There is an issue that is being pushed by one of the Presidential Candidates in the area of Religious Liberty that all voters in both Christian and non-Christian circles should be aware of. It made front page headlines last night, and here are a couple links and articles to the stories.
While we have always steered clear of worldly politics and will continue to do so, we have also been counseled about voting against those who oppose religious liberty. After taking a look at these stories please read the quote below.
Obama wants to expand faith-based programs
- "Says challenges faced today are 'too big for government to solve alone' - CHICAGO - Reaching out to religious voters, Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama
called for expanding President Bush's program steering federal social service dollars to religious groups and ' in a move sure to cause controversy ' supported some ability to hire and fire based on faith. ... "The challenges we face today ... are simply too big for government to solve alone," Obama said. ... "The challenges we face today ... are simply too big for government to solve alone," Obama said. ... He also only supports letting religious institutions hire and fire based on faith in the non-taxypayer funded portions of their activities, said a senior adviser to the campaign, who spoke on condition of anonymity to more freely describe the new policy.
Rev. Barry Lynn, executive director of Americans United for Separation of Church and State, criticized Obama's proposed expansion of a program he said has undermined civil rights and civil liberties. "I am disappointed that any presidential candidate would want to continue a failed policy of the Bush administration," he said. "It ought to be shut down, not continued."
... Obama proposes to elevate the program to a "moral center" of his administration, by renaming it the Council for Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships, and changing training from occasional huge conferences to empowering larger religious charities to mentor smaller ones in their communities. ... Obama also talked bluntly about the genesis of his Christian faith in his work as a community organizer in Chicago, and its importance to him now.
"In time, I came to see faith as being both a personal commitment to Christ and a commitment to my community; that while I could sit in church and pray all I want, I wouldn't be fulfilling God's will unless I went out and did the Lord's work," he said." -MSNBC Front Page News -Posted 2008-07-01
Obama courts conservatives with new faith program
- "ZANESVILLE, Ohio - Taking a page from President Bush, Democrat Barack Obama said Tuesday he wants to expand White House efforts to steer social service dollars to religious groups, risking protests in his own party with his latest aggressive reach for voters who usually vote Republican. ... And while Bush supports allowing all religious groups to make any employment decisions based on faith, Obama proposes allowing religious institutions to hire and fire based on religion only in the non-taxpayer-funded portions of their activities ' consistent with current federal, state and local laws. "That makes perfect sense," he said." -Yahoo News -Posted 2008-07-01
"The Lord would have His people bury political questions. On these themes silence is eloquence. Christ calls upon His followers to come into unity on the pure gospel principles which are plainly revealed in the word of God. We cannot with safety vote for political parties; for we do not know whom we are voting for. We cannot with safety take part in any political scheme. We cannot labor to please men who will use their influence to repress religious liberty, and to set in operation oppressive measures to lead or compel their fellow-men to keep Sunday as the Sabbath. The first day of the week is not a day to be reverenced. It is a spurious sabbath, and the members of the Lord's family cannot participate with the men who exalt this day, and violate the law of God by trampling upon His Sabbath. The people of God are not to vote to place such men in office; for when they do this, they are partakers with them of the sins which they commit while in office." {Gospel Workers 391.2} (1915)

-- ' The question of religious liberty is very important, and it should be handled with great wisdom and discretion. Unless this is done there is danger that by our own course of action we shall bring upon ourselves a crisis before we are prepared for it." {TM 219.3}
